A fuzzy quality control-decision support system for improving operational reliability of liquid transfer operations in laboratory automation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Quality control in liquid transfer operations can eliminate false assay results due to transfer failures, monitor the stability of laboratory equipment, provide baselines for continuous improvement, and enable automatic recovery actions for a number of fault conditions. This paper describes the work done to add real-time quality control capability in liquid transfer operations on a closed-loop controlled MEMS based liquid transfer device. Real-time data acquisition enables the interpretation of system variables. Using fuzzy logic as a decision support tool, an overall quality metric and failure mode is deduced from these variables for each channel per operation. Detection of ordinary fault conditions like clogged tips or unexpected empty source wells can activate automatic recovery actions without human intervention, leading to 24/7 utilization of an automated laboratory system. Exported quality data can be used for bio-informatics data analysis as well as documentation for regulatory agencies. 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Decentralized Fuzzy-PID Based Control Model for a Multivariable Liquid Level System
Multivariable liquid level control is essential in process industries to ensure quality of the product and safety of the equipment. However, the significant problems of the control system include excessive time consumption and percentage overshoot, which result from ineffective performance of the tuning methods of the PID controllers used for the system. In this paper, fuzzy logic was used to t...
متن کاملA Fuzzy Based Decision Support System For Supply Chain Disruption Management
Among the supply chain risk types, disruptions that result from natural disasters, sanctions, transportation problems and equipment failure can seriously disrupt or delay the flow of material, information and cash. The aim of this research was to propose a hybrid model for disruption management, which is the process of achieving plans or strategies to reduce the expenses incurred by the disrupt...
متن کاملError assessment in man-machine systems using the CREAM method and human-in-the-loop fault tree analysis
Background and Objectives: Despite contribution to catastrophic accidents, human errors have been generally ignored in the design of human-machine (HM) systems and the determination of the level of automation (LOA). This paper aims to develop a method to estimate the level of automation in the early stage of the design phase considering both human and machine performance. Methods: A quantita...
متن کاملDetermination of Volumetric Mass Transfer Coefficient in Gas-Solid-Liquid Stirred Vessels Handling High Solids Concentrations: Experiment and Modeling
Rigorous analysis of the determinants of volumetric mass transfer coefficient (kLa) and its accurate forecasting are of vital importance for effectively designing and operating stirred reactors. Majority of the available literature is limited to systems with low solids concentration, while there has always been a need to investigate the gas-liquid hydrodynamics in tanks handling ...
متن کاملA FAM-based Switched Control Approach for the Automation of Bioregenerative Life Support Systems
The automation of bioregenerative life support systems poses challenges for the development of model-based approaches given the varying characteristic of the biological processes that constitute them. Switching control paradigms offer an alternative for the management of such uncertainty by introducing flexibility into the control path and allowing for different control modes depending on the o...
